The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has articulated its stance on the adoption of artificial intelligence, emphasizing that a responsible and privacy-centric approach is crucial for unlocking benefits for businesses, productivity, and the wider community. The regulator highlights that building public trust is paramount, and this can only be achieved if AI systems are designed and implemented in a way that respects privacy rights and ensures fairness and transparency in how personal information is handled.

The OAIC advises organizations to conduct comprehensive privacy impact assessments before deploying AI systems and to embed a "privacy by design" approach throughout the technology's lifecycle. By proactively addressing privacy risks and being transparent with individuals about how their data is being used by AI, businesses can not only ensure compliance with the Privacy Act but also enhance their social license to operate. The Commissioner stresses that getting AI right is a shared responsibility that will ultimately foster innovation and drive economic growth while safeguarding the fundamental rights of Australians.
