The Guardian reports that Spanish authorities have launched an investigation into a teenager accused of using artificial intelligence to create and distribute fabricated nude videos of classmates. The case, which has emerged in the Extremadura region, highlights a disturbing and growing trend of AI-powered digital harassment. The teenager allegedly used accessible AI software to digitally alter existing images of fellow students, creating realistic but fake explicit content which was then shared among peers.

This incident has prompted a significant response from law enforcement and school officials, bringing to the forefront the legal and ethical challenges posed by the misuse of generative AI. The investigation is one of the first of its kind in Spain to deal directly with AI-generated abusive material involving minors. It raises critical legal questions about how to classify such offenses, which can inflict severe emotional and psychological harm on victims. The case is expected to fuel the ongoing debate in Spain and across Europe about the need for specific legislation to criminalize the creation and non-consensual distribution of deepfake pornography and other forms of synthetic media abuse.
