Congressmen Vern Buchanan and David Schweikert introduced the Digital Evaluation for Tax Enforcement and Compliance Tracking (DETECT) Act (H.R. 4974), aiming to empower the IRS with artificial intelligence tools to strengthen tax fraud detection and safeguard taxpayer dollars. The bill requires the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to report on AI’s potential to assist IRS enforcement.

The IRS has made significant strides in combating tax fraud, identifying over $9.1 billion in fraud in fiscal year 2024 alone. The DETECT Act seeks to build on this momentum by evaluating AI’s role in enhancing fraud detection and recovery efforts.

The legislation enjoys bipartisan support with cosponsors from multiple states. Buchanan emphasizes the responsibility to protect taxpayers and improve government efficiency through AI.
