Newsweek reports that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created under the Trump administration and initially led by Elon Musk, is deploying an AI tool designed to accelerate the elimination of approximately 100,000 federal regulations, aiming to cut half of all federal rules by the first anniversary of Trump’s second inauguration. The AI tool scans existing regulations to flag outdated or unnecessary rules, potentially saving trillions in compliance costs and drastically reducing labor hours required for deregulation.

Despite ambitious goals, concerns have emerged regarding the AI’s accuracy in interpreting complex legal language and the potential for misclassification of valid regulations. Federal employees have expressed skepticism, and legal experts question whether such AI-driven deregulation efforts will withstand judicial scrutiny under the Administrative Procedure Act. The initiative faces internal resistance and challenges related to workforce reductions, but the administration continues to push forward with plans to integrate the AI tool across agencies.
