At the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), a Ukrainian legal expert specializing in AI law raised the alarm about the growing threat of AI-generated disinformation and fake news, stressing that the pace and scale of misinformation now outstrip traditional countermeasures. The expert underlined the importance of youth education and media literacy as essential tools to build resilience against these risks.

The presentation highlighted recent examples of how generative AI is exploited to produce persuasive fake news and manipulate public opinion, which undermines democratic processes and public trust. The expert called on governments, international organizations, and tech companies to invest in education programs and digital literacy campaigns for young people.

The event, organized by the Council of Europe, showcased a growing consensus that legal regulation alone is not enough to fight disinformation, and that empowering youth with critical thinking skills is crucial in the digital age.
