The European Commission is urging AI companies to sign a new voluntary Code of Practice designed to ensure responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence technologies across the European Union. The Code includes commitments to transparency, safety, human rights, and ethical principles, aiming to complement the upcoming binding AI Act.

Brussels hopes that widespread industry participation will establish best practices and strengthen public trust in AI systems ahead of the full enforcement of the AI Act. The Commission emphasizes that while the Code is voluntary, it represents an important step toward self-regulation and could help shape the future regulatory environment in Europe.

The initiative reflects the EU’s dual strategy of combining mandatory legislation with collaborative, industry-led approaches. By inviting companies to lead on responsible AI, the Commission aims to set global standards for ethics and safety in artificial intelligence.
