AISigil reports that on October 10, 2025, Italy officially became the first European Union Member State to implement a comprehensive national law dedicated to artificial intelligence, Law No. 132/2025. This legislative milestone anticipates and complements the EU AI Act, establishing a robust domestic framework for the governance, supervision, and ethical use of AI technologies. The law introduces specific provisions across vital sectors such as healthcare, labor, public administration, and the justice system, ensuring that AI deployment remains human-centric and transparent.

Key aspects of the legislation include the requirement for human oversight in administrative decisions and the prohibition of AI use for discriminatory monitoring in the workplace. Furthermore, the law allocates a €1 billion investment fund to foster national AI innovation and defines criminal liabilities for the malicious use of AI systems, such as in the creation of deepfakes used for fraud. By acting swiftly, Italy aims to create a secure legal environment that encourages technological adoption while safeguarding fundamental rights, setting a benchmark for other EU nations as they prepare to transpose the broader European regulations.
