28/10/2025 - The Hidden Role of AI in Health Insurance Decisions (USA)

argument: Notizie/News - Health Law

WJHL reports on the growing use of artificial intelligence by U.S. health insurance companies to decide whether to approve or deny coverage for medical treatments. Complex AI algorithms can review thousands of claims quickly and flag those to deny based on internal criteria that are not disclosed to patients or doctors. These opaque “black-box” systems are being used to cut costs, but they raise serious concerns that insurance decisions are being made without transparency or human oversight.

Patient advocates and medical professionals warn that AI-driven insurance decisions often override doctors’ judgments, leaving patients without necessary care and little ability to appeal. Lawsuits and regulatory challenges are emerging to question the legality and ethics of allowing algorithms to control health coverage. The article highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency in the use of AI in health insurance, calling for clear standards to ensure patient rights and quality of care are protected.
