Following the issuance of the Writ of Election for Singapore’s General Election 2025, there has been a notable increase in AI-generated videos related to the election, primarily on TikTok. A new law prohibits digitally manipulated content that misrepresents candidates’ statements or actions, with enforcement mechanisms including takedown orders and fines. Between April 15 and 19, 73 AI-related election videos were detected, with 11 containing manipulated visuals of prospective candidates.

The Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) is actively monitoring online content and working with social media platforms to address prohibited material. While some videos are clearly labeled as AI-generated, others are not, and the content ranges from political satire to misleading portrayals. Experts emphasize the threat deepfakes pose to public trust and election integrity, urging voters to critically assess online content and report suspicious material. Similar AI-driven election interference has been observed in countries like Pakistan, India, Indonesia, and the US.
