The Indian Express reports that the state of New Jersey has officially enacted legislation banning the use of AI-powered “nudify” tools that create fake nude images of minors. The law was introduced following a surge in cases where school-age children were targeted using AI to generate sexualized content.

The law criminalizes the production and distribution of such images, even when no real photos are involved, addressing a previously grey legal area. Lawmakers emphasized the psychological harm and exploitation facilitated by these tools, calling them a modern form of abuse.

New Jersey is among the first US states to pass such targeted legislation against synthetic image exploitation.
