EEAS – In a formal statement delivered during the UN General Assembly informal consultations on AI, the European Union emphasized the need for a globally coordinated and human-centric approach to AI governance. The session, held in New York in mid-March 2025, brought together member states to discuss the ethical, legal, and geopolitical implications of artificial intelligence.
The EU called for international legal standards rooted in fundamental rights, promoting transparency, safety, and accountability in AI development and deployment. The statement warned against unregulated uses of AI in warfare, surveillance, and disinformation.
The EU also underlined the need to bridge the global digital divide and prevent AI from deepening inequalities between countries. The bloc’s position aligns with its internal regulations like the AI Act, but the statement affirms that only multilateral action can provide effective governance in the face of rapid AI expansion.
