The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has introduced new practice directions for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in legal proceedings, setting a precedent for AI regulation in judicial processes across the region. These guidelines aim to ensure that AI technologies are used ethically and transparently in courtrooms.

One of the key aspects of the new rules is that AI-generated legal documents and case analyses must be verified by human legal professionals before being submitted in court. This measure is intended to prevent errors, misinformation, or reliance on AI-generated legal arguments that could compromise due process.

The CCJ’s practice directions also include requirements for transparency in AI usage. Lawyers must disclose when AI tools have been used in legal research or drafting court submissions, ensuring that courts are aware of AI’s influence in case preparation.

Additionally, the guidelines emphasize that AI cannot replace human judgment in judicial decisions. While AI can assist in analyzing legal precedents and improving case management efficiency, the final judgment must always be made by human judges.

Legal experts consider the CCJ’s move an important step in balancing AI’s benefits with ethical and procedural safeguards in the justice system. Other jurisdictions may follow suit in establishing similar regulations to maintain fairness and accountability in AI-assisted legal practice.
